Apple Tablet: Will you buy one?

In a few short weeks we’ll know if the talk about Apple releasing a brand new tablet computer is legit or not. While it has been speculated for years, the talk of this current incarnation – an oversized iPod touch with a 10 inch screen has gotten just about every analyst talking.

At this point though, I am not sure if I really need it.

Notice, I didn’t say I am not sure if I really want an Apple tablet. Of course I want one. But having an iPhone and a Mac Book Pro already in my laptop bag, what value could I possibly get from a tablet computer (and don’t say that I’d just look really cool because I am cool anyway, of course).

Some of the fake prototypes of the device that have surfaced leave more questions than answers. For example, how comfortable would it be to type on a glass screen? How would you even hold an oversized iPod touch device? Would you sit it flat on your lap? Well, that doesn’t seem like it would be that comfortable.

I am an Apple fanboy, that is for certain. I’m tempted by every new product they introduce, but this one just doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense for them. And, I wonder about the alleged $700 price tag. Surely they could command a larger price when you can’t even get a 32gb iPod touch for less than $400 and that has a 3 inch screen and no camera.

Would you buy an Apple tablet?

  1. Tablet computers have tried long and hard to find a real market. The only time I ever see someone with one is CSI: NY.

You already mentioned the biggest hurdle…the keyboard. people accept the touch screen on the iphone and other touch screen devices as a main input because it’s so small. people expect better input for larger devices.

You might wanna chuck this in the same bin as the Apple TV and the Power Mac G4 Cube.

  2. I actually have an Apple TV and yes, it could stand to be chucked.

  3. I love Apple products, but this is one that I just can’t see myself using. I guess I’ll wait to see what the design is like, but it’d have to offer some amazing things before I’d give up my laptop or even my phone for it. I also feel that size will determine the final outcome for a lot of people.

  4. The “prototypes” don’t actually look that appealing to me. When I think of tablet I think of something with a pen that I can use to write and take notes and such. My HP work tablet is not bad, it flips around and closes with the screen out to use with a pen, it’s not bad, I just don’t use it that often. My boss loves it and uses it all the time. Also not sure I’m ready for a touch computer. The iphone is fine for that but we bought a few of the HP touchsmarts and they’re a pain in the ass to actually touch the screen to use it while the keyboard and mouse are right in front of you. Seems like they were in such a hurry to release their cool new toy and beat Apple on something they forgot to think about real world functionality. I probably would not buy a tablet.
