And, having not watched Forgetting Sarah Marshall I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect. I am not going to really go into the story because i think that it is well established what this movie is about, however, i do want to comment on some of the acting. Russell Brand is just funny. My first exposure to him was his appearance on the Stern show and i thought he was hilarious. I think it is just his combination of dress and accent. And although this was a comedy, i definitely got the sense he could also pull off a deeper, more emotional type of dramatic character as well (if he wanted). Noah Hill was also really good in this movie. I haven’t been a fan of him at all, but he did a really good job. The most surprising to me? P-Diddy. I was expecting him to play himself, which he more or less did, but he was really funny as well. He also had way more screen time and lines than the trailer would lead you to believe.
I’ve been watching a lot of movies these past few days and I must say, they are a great cure for being alone and mostly bored. Hurt Locker, recipient of like 9 academy awards tonight, was a great flick. I remember vaguely seeing some of the promotion for it when it came out but dismissed it as just another opportunistic “Iraq” film. However, this movie rocked. Loved it from start to almost finish (it just sort of ends abruptly I felt). Kathryn Bigelow, the films director, was the first woman to win an Oscar for best director and she totally deserved it. I thought Jeremy Renner was robbed, and was disappointed Mo’ni’Qu’e or however she spells it won best support actress but, whatever. I also watched ‘The Perfect Getaway’ and it sucked for almost 80% of the film until the very end. It has a good twist, which makes it somewhat respectable. Next was Couples Retreat, and for a straight comedy I thought it was well done. It wasn’t laugh out loud funny, but entertaining. Finally, just finished “Up in the Air” which was very good. I like Clooney and I thought that the younger girl Anna Kendrick should have [...]

Checked out the new Star Trek today.

As I tweeted earlier, the movie was okay. It wasn’t great – just good, and really, that is a little bit of a let down with how psyched I was going in to see the film.

It occurs to me that J.J. Abrams is a great television story teller. Shows like Fringe, Lost and Alias really show how creative he is. However, movie wise Abrams still hasn’t found his rhythm.

Mission Impossible was good, but also not great. I actually can’t tell you the plot on that one. Cloverfield was pretty mediocre. It was memorable of course for the poor ending and even worse camera work (I know, I know it was intentional).

So here comes Star Trek.

I was really looking forward to seeing how Zachary Quinto played Spock, as the resemblance was uncanny. And for the most part, I thought he did a good job. I can’t honestly say any of the acting was bad. It was just — the story. The plot of this flick was about as creative and new as the Star Trek with the whales. How many more of Star Trek plots are going to involve some sort of world ending (or creating) weapon?

I also had a little bit of an issue with the pacing of the movie. It pretty much started fast and STAYED fast. Generally, that would be good. However, it made the movie go by unnaturally fast. Star Trek felt like it was a 45 min movie to me. It was like — Kirk’s dad suicides into Romulan ship, Kirk born, Kirk grows up in like 5 mins of movie time (same with Spock), Kirk gets in bar fight and next Kirk is captain of the Enterprise. That whole sequence of events felt like it took 15 mins or less. All along the way, we get these incredibly obvious introductions to the other main characters.

Kind of made me think of the saying (or maybe it is one I made up): Romance me a bit before you fuck me.

The actor who played McCoy (Karl Urban I believe was his name) did an incredible job. I also really enjoyed Sulu’s performance.

Obviously this movie is headed to a sequel. Hopefully the next one will have a good story and take a little more time developing it.
